Chicago

My Chicago Trip. Also, my first overseas trip.

So the place is beautiful. Clean and organized - which is pleasing.

I love travelling, love seeing new places. But I don't quite get the big deal about this country. Home is, and will always be India. Swadesh. No, I am not a cynic. Just, I don't get why people (in my country I mean) seem to be going bonkers about shifting to the United States of America (Except for more money maybe?).

Make no mistake, I am definitely looking forward to the rest of my trip. Just saying, since I was hoping to be struck by awesomeness when I reached here - given the number of people going wow about here. But it felt like, okay great.. but blah! No magic. What's the fuss about the american dream?
Here's some pictures I've taken so far.

Love.

p.s. - The food here is oh-my-god-so-fattening! I hope that I magically don't put on more weight over the -next 2 weeks! :-/

You've an opinion about a new place in like 2 days time and you're not a cynic. Hmm..interesting.. :D

Well, 1 day you mean. :D Who doesn't make opinions btw? Also, I didn't say there is anything wrong with the place did I? I did mention it's great, beautiful clean and all.. The magic though I fail to see. and hence, happen to mention how swadesh it is and will always bem. To each his own? :)

Hey Devil's Own,

Nice2know u're in Chicago..it's a swell place..fr the movie maniax like me, Chicago's the place whr they shot most of 'The Dark Knight'("Why so sirious?" :)) n a million othr memorable movies (remember Bubba, the shrimp guy in 'Forrest Gump'? His real life restaurant is der in Chicago :))

Check out the Chicago Cloud Gate or the Bean..it's an a-Mazin piece of work by an Indian dude(cnt remember his name :P).. ppl said it cudnt b made but he did it..do check it out..its real cool!!

What i loved bout Chicago ws the pub hoppin...whr we pplz wud just keep jumpin frm one pub 2 anothr all thru the night.. n u gotta b dressed 2 the T fr thm 2 tak u seriously.. n even tho we wore the choicest tuxedos, we hd no shillings in our pockets...but we hd a blast!! :)

I think its nt America as a country but America as an idea tht excites ppl.. its open2all n u cn chart ur own success path.. fr eg, openin a business in US is more conducive thn a lotta othr places in the world...thr'z a lotta respect 4 an individual n his dreams in the US....so as an idea, i guess dats wht makes it so exciting.

i wunder hw long u'll b der...most ppl kinda start missin mera Bharat Mahaan after bout 2 months or so.. think u'll find a lotta spare time ...u cud keep bloggin :)

u said it!.. the fud is heaven fr hard core carnivores like me.. fries r like a staple fud der :) If u into fud, u shud try the Indian n Pakistani fud joints thr..they're amazing!!!

Enjoy urself n do post more :)

Rock On, Nidhi,

Just saying...not judging...to each her own :P btw what dimensions do you use for comparing two places (countries ?). Are these external factors of tangible nature or mostly deep rooted innate feelings.

Also are you on FB ? :P

You're in Chicago! Fancy that! :)

See if you can go to Green Zebra, and Ras Dashen while you're there.

Money is not always the reason why people move from places (at least some of them). I for one like the detached feeling you have when living as an expat. While you can do toe dipping to understand the local ways, you are not compelled to immerse, and then you can have wood from trees view of the place you have left behind.

Specifically about India, if you like the crowds, you may not like to leave India...

@Nitin - I am not comparing the way you think. Just saying one is home the other is not. And the one that is not, that people from the home country go ga ga about.. Just saying, I am not going ga ga! :)

@Anonymous - Didn't.

@Ashish - Thank you! :)

@Unsui - I would agree to the fact that money is not the reason people move, however from India, most people move to the west for better prospects or the american dream - translating to money, don't you think? :)
"While you can do toe dipping to understand the local ways, you are not compelled to immerse" - My feelings exactly!
I don't know about crowds, since I find myself usually preferring to be a loner.. I run from crowds.. But then swadesh, home. I am a little too patriotic. :)
