Krasnoyarsk-26

I read this book by sidney sheldon and found some interesting information

In Siberia, somewhere in the mountains, and 600 feet below, where only an elevator specially built can go, there's a place called krasnoyarsk-26.

it is a secret city and has been built like any othermodern city. but it's sole existence is for the cause of producing plutonium for building weapons of mass destruction. one hundred thousand scientists and technicians live and work there. in the beginning they were given the finest food and clothes and housing. but they are all there with one restriction that they must agree never to leave. they must cut themselves off completely from the rest of the world for the rest of their lives.

The plutonium is produced in a giant laboratory which has three enormous reactors housed in an immense cave. out of the three reactors, a single one out of them can produce enough plutonium to make anatomic bomb every three days. a single reactor produces half a ton of plutonium in an year, which is enough to make a hundred bombs. they have loads of plutonium stored, but the catch is, they can't stop producing more plutonium even if they want to, because the plutonium from the reactor furnishes the power for the city above. if the reactor is turned off, there will be no light and no heat and thepeople will quickly freeze to death. also, because of the poor state of the russian economy, there is no longer the money to pay the scientists and technicians. the homes they had been given have been deteriorating and there is no money to repair them. all the luxuries they had been given have disappeared and they haven't been paid for months. the people are getting desperate. the paradox is, the amount of plutonium stored there is worth untold millions of dollars, yet the people who created it have nothing andare starting to go hungry.

The secret underground city of krasnoyarsk-26 is one of the thirteen closed cities engaged in nuclear production. krasnoyarsk-26 is located in central siberia, two thousand miles from moscow, and since its creation, it has produced 45 tons of weapons grade plutonium (the book i read this in was published in 2000). although two of the reactors were shut down in1992, one remains active, currently producing half a ton of plutonium a year to make atomic bombs.this is a link where you can know more about it.

Btw, the book i read all this in was called The sky is falling by sidney sheldon

If you have any interesting pieces of information, do post them, in the comments, and I'll post it here.

hi...

i just finished reading that book, i found it same interesting abt this secret city underground in russia...

i feel sydney sheldon gives some good piece of information like this.

Even in a book called "Doomsday Conspiracy", he would have depicted how secretively and effective one agency works to help the aliens(its actually a fiction).

Good thought to write something about such topic... ^ _ ^

Hi, some comments on my side.
"... but they are all there with one restriction that they must agree never to leave. they must cut themselves off completely from the rest of the world for the rest of their lives." That is not true: it was not possible to leave town without permission, but as most of people had relatives, vacations, etc, they of course did had possibilities to take yearly vacation anywhere. There were also different levels of access: ones with highest level were not allowed to leave USSR. People like to exagerate things :), as usual.
What was true, is that they were not allowed to speak about it at all. Also true that the confidentiality contract they were signing hand no expiry date.

Actually US knew pretty well what was going there, and soviets of course knew that US knew, so all secrecy was actually because of soviet people, not because of rest of the world.

Another very important issue: those were people on secret cities that were protected from the rest of nation, not vice versa. Because living standards in such cities were outstanding compared to rest of USSR. Also people that worked there were educated and carefully checked, so no junk people were allowed there, that made those cities very safe. That is why most of people did not wanted to get back to civil reality, that was poor, hungry and ugly. Unfortunately that had led to unexpected accidents when people were going mad and were loosing their mind, because they were actually not prepared mentally to live in a perfect dream world.

This info is from someone who was working there...

hey i just stoped by and saw the other comments and they are quiet funny. But the underground complex is not a city, its got cool trains and elevators, wich for 1950 were fine tech.. but there's no coffe shops or restaurants like in the book or anything like that.., they have an underground train for waste.
the complex does have three reactors.. and the complex had other scientific projects besides nuclear production, people would be down there for sometimes a year at a time.. and the town in witch it was settled people was taken prisoners as political prisoners or state enemies and put to work for the construction.. although it supported the city 15 miles away with energy, elder folks have a bitter memory of those days.
The complex closed in 2003 in agreement by the goverment to provide fosile fuel to the people of the town.
